Embracing bibs and losing our underwear

Prior to signing up for LEJOG, Gary was already a seasoned road-biker, but Kev and I were new to the craft. We've been life-long mountain bikers, and irrationally proud of it.

So when Gary introduced us to cycling bibs, and not wearing underwear underneath, our first reaction was "eeeeeeuwwww!"

But we rapidly became converts. On LEJOG we expect to take 3 bibs each (3 day rotation: wearing, washing, drying).

1. Improved Comfort and Fit

  • No Waistband Pressure: Cycling bibs eliminate the need for a waistband, which can dig into the abdomen or restrict breathing, especially on long rides. The straps distribute the weight over the shoulders, providing a more comfortable and secure fit.
  • Stay in Place: The straps keep the bib securely in position, preventing the shorts from sliding down or bunching up while riding, especially during intense pedaling or when shifting positions.

2. Better Coverage

  • No Gaps: Bibs provide better coverage by extending higher on the torso. This prevents gaps between your jersey and shorts, which can lead to sunburn, wind exposure, or cold drafts.
  • Additional Support: The higher rise in the back can offer some support to the lower back, which is helpful on long rides.

3. Enhanced Chamois Stability

  • Better Pad Placement: The chamois (padded area) stays in place more effectively in bibs because the straps keep the shorts firmly positioned. This reduces the risk of chafing and ensures consistent comfort throughout the ride.

4. Aerodynamics

  • Sleek Design: Bibs often have a more streamlined fit compared to shorts. Without a bulky waistband, bibs create a smoother profile, which can reduce drag and enhance performance.

5. Long-Distance Comfort

  • Reduced Chafing: With no waistband and better positioning of the chamois, bibs minimize rubbing and irritation, making them ideal for long-distance cycling or multi-day rides.

And why is it important to lose the underwear (boxes/jocks) too?

1. Designed to Be Worn Alone

  • Cycling bibs (and shorts) are specifically designed to be worn without underwear. The integrated chamois pad (the padded area) is engineered to provide cushioning, reduce friction, and wick away moisture, eliminating the need for an extra layer.

2. Reduces Chafing

  • Wearing underwear introduces seams and elastic bands that can cause chafing and discomfort during long rides. The chamois in cycling bibs is seamless and smooth to minimize irritation.

3. Improved Breathability

  • Cycling bibs are made from technical, moisture-wicking fabrics that help keep you dry and comfortable. Adding underwear can trap moisture, leading to discomfort, rashes, or even saddle sores.

4. Hygiene

  • Underwear can hold sweat and bacteria, potentially increasing the risk of infections like folliculitis or other skin irritations. Cycling bibs are designed to be washed after every ride, which helps maintain hygiene.

5. Better Fit and Comfort

  • Without underwear, the bib conforms to your body more effectively, ensuring the chamois stays in place. This improves comfort and reduces the likelihood of fabric bunching up or moving around.
